This module covers a range of texts written in the course of the eighteenth century, exemplifying diverse genres. It will foster an awareness of literary conventions and literary history (the period covers the subsequent ages of Neo-Classicism and sensibility). Texts will include selections from such authors as A. Pope, J. Thomson, T. Gray, W. Cowper, L. Sterne, H. Mackenzie
a) The Norton Anthology of English Literature, vol 1
b) - L. Sterne, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy
- L. Sterne, A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy
- H. Mackenzie, The Man of Feeling
c) Students will also read three of the following texts: A. Pope, The Rape of the Lock; D. Defoe, Robinson Crusoe; J. Swift, Gulliver’s Travels; H. Fielding, Tom Jones, T. Smollet, The Expedition of Humprey Clinker
