JOINT PhD PROGRAM IN LANGUAGE SCIENCES, UNIVERSITIES OF PAVIA AND
BERGAMO
The program focuses on a number of core areas in linguistics, including language typology, historical linguistics, Indo-European linguistics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, computational linguistics, corpus linguistics, second language teaching, translation studies, linguistics of modern languages, European philologies. The Ph.D. advisory board includes specialists in these areas, both from the universities involved in the program and from other Italian and foreign universities. The program involves three curricula, `General linguistics, language typology, historical linguistics, philological traditions', `Applied linguistics, computational linguistics, and linguistics of modern languages', and `Sociolinguistics and pragmatics'.
Admission to the program is based on two evaluation rounds. Candidates should first submit a research project (which they can change if admitted), as well as their CV and qualifications. These are evaluated by a committe, and successful candidates are admitted to the final evaluation round, which is based on an interview. In addition, they are expected to attend the following three courses (12 hours, 12 credits each), which will be offered to all students of the three cycles within the joint PhD program (XXXIII, XXXIV and XXXV cycle)

Students are also expected to attend research seminars organized at the participating institutions and spend time at foreign institutions specializing in their research areas.
