Maria Pavesi, Professor of English language and Linguistics since 2002, graduated cum laude in Modern Languages and Literatures from the University of Bologna in 1981. She was awarded a one-year Fulbright scholarship and received a Master of Science in Multilingual/Multicultural Education from Florida State University. She then obtained a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh (1986) and a doctorate degree in Linguistics from the University of Pavia (1990). Maria Pavesi teaches English language, English second language acquisition and audiovisual translation in the Department of Humanities where she is currently in charge of the Section of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. She was the Academic Coordinator of the Pavia University Postgraduate Programme in Foreign Language Teacher Training (1999-2002, 2013 and 2015) and served as Head of the Language Centre of the University of Pavia from 2005 to 2008. She was a Visiting Scholar at the Universities of Stockholm, Konstanz, Birmingham and Manchester and Visiting Professor at the University of Roehampton (academic year 2008-2009).

Her research has addressed several topics in English applied linguistics and has been mainly focussed on the acquisition and learning of English as a second/foreign language, the English of science, corpus linguistics and audiovisual translation. In these fields she has published widely, both nationally and internationally. Maria Pavesi has taken part in several government-funded research projects on corpora and multimodality in language teaching, linguistic analysis and translation. She also had a leading role in two EU projects on CLIL and on subtitling in second language acquisition. For the past few years she has been focussing on audiovisual translation, working on features of spoken language in Italian film dubbing and on audiovisual input in incidental second language acquisition. She has been a reviewer for the publisher Routledge and for the journals TextusJournal of PragmaticsThe Translator and Meta. She is a member of the Scientific Committee of the series Materiali Linguistici (Franco Angeli) and sits on the Advisory Board of the journal Perspectives. Studies in Translatology (Routledge). Maria Pavesi was the Principal Investigator of the international excellence project “English and Italian Audiovisual Language: Translation and Language Learning” (2010-2012)  funded by the Alma Mater Ticinensis Foundation and is currently member of the core team on the AHRC-funded networking project entitled “Tapping the Power of Foreign Film: Audiovisual Translation as Cross-cultural Mediation” led by University of East Anglia.

Recent research projects and networks

2010-2012 “English and Italian Audiovisual Language: Translation and Language learning”, an international excellence project founded by the Alma Mater Ticinensis Foundation: Project manager.

The project brought together researchers from the University of Pavia, the University of Malta and the University of Loughborough, working on various aspects of filmic speech, the semiotics of film, screen translation and second language acquisition via AV input. One of the major outcomes of the project is the Pavia Corpus of Film Dialogue, a parallel and comparable corpus at present comprising more than 700,000 words of Anglophone, dubbed and original Italian film transcriptions.

2013 “Empirical evaluation of audiovisual translation: A new integrated approach”, University of Trieste research funds: participant. Principal investigator: Dr Elisa Perego.

2015-2017 University of Pavia strategic theme “Towards a Governance Model for International Migration: an Interdisciplinary and Diachronic Perspective” (MIGRA- TI-N): Member of the sub-group working on the “Linguistic aspects of migration” and dealing with university students’ exposure to English in untutored contexts.

2016-2017 “Tapping the Power of Foreign Language Films: Audiovisual Translation as Cross-cultural Mediation”, Art and Humanities Research Council Grant AH/N007026/1: Member of the Core Team.

The project is an internationally and interdisciplinary network project funded as a platform to explore audiovisual translation as cross-cultural mediation.
