Curriculum

Maria Freddi is Associate Professor of English Language and Linguistics at the Department of Humanities of the University of Pavia, where she was appointed by the Faculty of Humanities in September 2011, after obtaining qualification for the L-LIN/12 (Language and Translation: English Language) scientific and disciplinary area in September 2010. From October 2011 to December 2013 she served as Head of the University Language Centre. In 2014 she was offered a Visiting Fellowship at Clare Hall College, Cambridge (UK).

Before that she had worked as tenured Researcher in the same area, Faculty and University since November 2005, after moving from the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature of the University of Bologna, where she first got a position as Researcher and Assistant Professor in English Linguistics in July 2001.

Since she started service in 2001, she has been teaching intensively to undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students a variety of courses on English Grammar, Text Analysis, English Corpus Linguistics, Quantitative Linguistic Methods, English for Academic and Specific Purposes, and Film Translation.

She holds a PhD on the rhetoric of science from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan (PhD course in "Language sciences, philology and literature"), which she was awarded with a final examination and dissertation defence on "Science and Argumentation" in April 2001.

She graduated in Modern Languages from the University of Bologna in November 1995, with a Master's thesis on "Semantics and Pragmatics of some English Intersentential Connectives and their Italian Equivalents", final score 110/110 cum laude, after spending the last year of her degree course at the University of Birmingham, UK.

She also holds a M.Mus. degree (Diploma in Piano) from Bologna Conservatoire "G.B. Martini" (February 2001).

Temi di ricerca

Current research themes: English corpus linguistics and quantitative research methods; EAP/ESP and the Rhetoric of Science and Technology; descriptive grammars and ELT.

Progetti di ricerca

My research activity has focused on corpus linguistics and quantitative research methods; English for Academic and Specific Purposes (EAP, ESP), in particular English for Science and Technology (EST); and descriptive grammar and English Language Teaching (ELT):

On corpus linguistics and quantitative research methodology, I have published a Bussola (a Compass!) with the Italian academic publisher Carocci (you see a picture in the list of publications below) to help novices get orientation in this fast-developing field of linguistic study. The Compass is now in need of a revision and update, so I am planning a reprint or revised edition.

As a result of my interest in statistics applied to language study, I promoted and taught intensive courses on "Statistics for the Human Sciences" from 2010 to 2015, in collaboration with statisticians from various Italian Universities. The Vth edition was held in Asti on 8-10 October, 2015. In 2019 I helped organise and participated in the Training School on Quantitative Research Methodologies within CA 15221 -  We ReLaTe training programme. The school took place at Goethe-University, Frankfurt. The report of the school I wrote is available here.

Work on EAP, ESP, EST and the rhetoric of science has been done in partnership with the Centre for Research in English and Applied Linguistics at Chemnitz Technical University (Germany), with whom we set up an ongoing Erasmus exchange programme for graduate students specialising in Linguistics.

In 2016 I joined CA 15221 - Advancing effective institutional models towards cohesive Teaching, Learning, Research and Writing development (WeReLaTe), aimed at creating synergy among four key Higher Education activities - research, writing, teaching and learning. I have taken part in the Action in the double capacity of Management Committee member and Science Communication Manager.

More recently I have joined the GELS (Global Engineers Language Skills) network of the University of Cambridge (UK) that focuses on the language skills of future engineers to prepare them for the increasingly challenging demands of the international market.

I am also a member of the national research project on “Knowledge Dissemination Across Media in English: Continuity and change in discourse strategies, ideologies, and epistemologies” (PRIN 2015TJ8ZAS, 2017-2019). I presented the research done for the project at the last Rhetoric in Society (RiS7) conference in Ghent, the Rhetoric Society of Europe biennial meeting, 11-13 September 2019.

On grammar and ELT, on July 5-7, 2018 I convened the 28th European Systemic Functional Linguistics Conference on the topics of Language, Specialised Knolwedge and Literacy. I am currently working on an edited collection of papers to be published with Equinox International publishers.
